How-to-firewall

DTC uses standard mail/web/ssh/ftp server ports, and you can most third party firewall scripts (shorewall, ufw, etc.). To install and configure ufw on debian/ubuntu:

# aptitude install ufw
# ufw allow 53/udp
# ufw allow 21/tcp
# ufw allow 22/tcp
# ufw allow 25/tcp
# ufw allow 53/tcp
# ufw allow 80/tcp
# ufw allow 110/tcp
# ufw allow 143/tcp
# ufw allow 443/tcp
# ufw allow 465/tcp
# ufw allow 587/tcp
# ufw allow 993/tcp
# ufw allow 995/tcp
# ufw enable

On linux you might also check that you have the nf_conntrack_ftp module loaded for ftp ports to work properly. (BSD and other OS's may have an application helper or similar kernel-level support.)
