DirectoryIndexHowTo

How to Configure Directory Index for an Individual Domain.

Introduction

Apache can be configured to serve up a default page. Normally this is something like index.html or index.php or index.cgi or index.pl or index.htm or index.php4.

If you have both an index.php and index.html file in the root folder then Apache needs to know which file to choose.

Apache has a setting called DirectoryIndex.

The Directory Index setting in DTC General Configuration only defaults the Directory Index for the entire server.

This wiki page explains how to over ride the default server setting for an individual domain.

How to:

Use a .htaccess file to set an different Directory Index for an individual domain you must over ride the Directory Index value in the vHosts.conf file

In the domains html root folder create a file called .htaccess with the following line in it:

   DirectoryIndex index.html index.php index.cgi index.pl index.htm index.php4

This example over rides the site default to make index.html the first file that apache will serve up.

File Locations

  • vHosts
DTC writes vhost information into: /var/lib/dtc/etc/vhosts.conf
  • .htaccess web root
If the domain is www.example.org and the admin is example.org then the sites default web root will be at: /var/www/sites/example.org/example.org/subdomains/www/html
